EV Charger Installation in Sydney: The Opportunity (and the Traps)

Electric vehicles are flooding Sydney's roads. Every one of those Teslas, BYDs, and Polestars needs to be charged, and the trickle charger plugged into a standard 10A garage socket isn't cutting it for most commuters. The demand for dedicated Level 2 EV charger installations is massive, and it's a huge opportunity for electricians.

The Typical Scope of Work

A standard EV charger install isn't just bolting a plastic box to the wall. It involves:

• Maximum Demand Calculation: An EV charger pulls a continuous heavy load (usually 32A single-phase, or up to 32A three-phase). You must calculate if the existing consumer mains can handle this alongside the oven, air con, and pool pump.
• Switchboard Upgrades: A massive percentage of older Sydney homes require a switchboard upgrade to fit the new breaker and RCD, and often a consumer mains upgrade.
• Cable Routing: Running 6mm or thicker cable from the main board to the garage. If it's a two-story brick veneer house with no sub-floor, this can be a nightmare to make look neat.
• Load Management Integration: Many high-end chargers require a CT clamp installed at the mains to actively monitor total house load and throttle the car charging to prevent blowing the service fuse.

The Strata Nightmare

If you get a call from an apartment owner wanting a charger in their basement car space, be warned. Strata electrical work for EV chargers is incredibly complex. You have to deal with body corporate approvals, running sub-mains from the lot owner's meter (which might be 15 floors up), or integrating into a managed communal charging system. Many sole traders refuse this work outright because the quoting and admin time is brutal.

When to Refer the Lead

If you have the training, the supplier relationships, and the time, EV chargers are highly profitable. But if you don't?

Maybe you don't want to deal with the smart-charger commissioning apps that always fail to connect to the customer's Wi-Fi. Maybe you realize the job needs a Level 2 ASP to upgrade the street connection. Or maybe you're just too busy with your standard maintenance work.

Don't just tell the customer "no." EV charger clients are usually high-income homeowners—exactly the kind of clients you want to keep happy. Tell them you'll refer them to a specialized team. Forward the lead to an installation partner, let them deal with the heavy cabling and the Wi-Fi setups, and collect a solid referral fee for your trouble.
