Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Sydney: A Tradie's Guide to Pricing and Referring

Switchboard upgrades are the bread and butter of domestic electrical work. Every house built before the 1990s needs one, and every new appliance (solar, EV chargers, induction cooktops) triggers the requirement. But quoting them can be a minefield. What starts as a simple board swap can easily turn into an asbestos nightmare or a Level 2 service mains upgrade.

What Does a Standard Upgrade Cost?

If a customer asks you for a rough price over the phone, you should be hesitant. However, the standard market rate in Sydney for a basic residential switchboard upgrade (moving from ceramic fuses to RCBOs in a modern enclosure) sits between $1,200 and $2,500.

But you need to price the job based on the hidden traps:

  • Asbestos Panels: Older boards are notorious for asbestos backing panels. You either need to encapsulate it safely or hire a licensed removalist, which adds hundreds of dollars and significant time.
  • Consumer Mains: If the existing mains are 6mm cloth-wired or simply undersized for the new maximum demand, they must be upgraded. If they run to a point of attachment on the roof, you suddenly need a Level 2 ASP electrician to disconnect and reconnect at the street.
  • Three-Phase Power: Upgrading a three-phase board requires significantly more expensive RCBOs and takes longer to dress neatly.
  • Earthing Upgrades: A switchboard upgrade triggers a requirement to bring the main earthing system up to current AS/NZS 3000 standards. This often means driving a new earth stake and running a new earth wire to the water pipes.

Selling the Value, Not the Price

Customers don't want to spend $2,000 on a metal box they never look at. To win the job, you have to sell the safety aspect. Talk about RCDs saving lives. Talk about old ceramic fuses causing house fires. Talk about future-proofing their home for modern appliances.

When to Refer the Job

Switchboard upgrades take time, focus, and a lot of testing. If you are fully booked, pulling a guy off rough-ins to spend a day upgrading a board might disrupt your entire week. Or, if you open the meter box and realize it requires a massive Level 2 ASP consumer mains upgrade, you might not have the accreditation to do it.

Don't just walk away from the lead. Refer it.
