Customer Ghosted After a Quote? Stop Chasing Dead Leads

You drive 40 minutes in traffic. You spend 45 minutes walking through the house with the customer, listening to their grand plans for garden lighting and a switchboard upgrade. You drive home. You spend an hour that night typing up a detailed quote. You hit send.

And then... crickets. Nothing. Not even a "no thanks, too expensive." Just silence.

Getting ghosted after quoting is one of the most frustrating parts of running a trade business. Every ghosted quote is hundreds of dollars in unpaid labour burned. Here is why it happens, and how to stop it.

Why They Ghost You

  • The 3-Quote Rule: They read somewhere online that they should "always get three quotes." They were never going to choose you; they just needed your price to justify going with the cheap guy.
  • Sticker Shock: They thought a switchboard upgrade would cost $400. You quoted $2,000. They are too embarrassed or polite to tell you they can't afford it, so they ignore you.
  • You Were Too Slow: As mentioned in our quoting tips guide, if you take five days to send the quote, they have already hired the guy who sent it the next morning.

How to Stop Wasting Time on Tyre-Kickers

The best way to handle getting ghosted is to stop quoting the people who are going to ghost you. You need to qualify your leads hard on the first phone call.

Ask for photos. Ask for their budget. If they say, "I'm just trying to find the cheapest price," tell them politely that you aren't the cheapest and wish them luck. If a job sounds like a nightmare, is out of your area, or the customer sounds difficult, do not drive out to quote it.

The "Refer and Forget" Strategy

When you get a call from a customer who is out of your immediate service area (say, they are in Western Sydney and you hate driving there), or the job is something you hate quoting, you have a better option than ignoring them or wasting your time.

Refer the lead to a trusted partner. Tell the customer: "I can't take this on right now, but I'm going to pass your details to a team who specializes in this. They will call you to quote it."

You send the details off. If they quote it and get ghosted, it cost you zero time. If they quote it and win, you get a referral payout. You literally make money from a lead that might have wasted three hours of your life.

The Follow-Up Protocol

For the jobs you do quote, establish a strict follow-up rule. Send the quote. Text them two days later to ask if they have questions. If they don't reply, archive the quote and forget about it. Your time is better spent doing billable work or finding better clients, not chasing people who don't respect your time.
