Electrician Quoting Tips: How to Win the Jobs You Want (and Dump the Rest)

There is nothing worse than driving across town, spending an hour talking to a customer, spending another hour that night typing up a quote, and then getting ghosted. Quoting is unpaid labour. If your win rate is low, you are bleeding money. Here is how to quote smarter, close more jobs, and earn more money.

1. Qualify Hard on the Phone

Don't just jump in the van for anyone who calls. Ask questions. "What's the timeline?" "Do you have a budget in mind?" "Have you had other sparkies look at this?" If they sound like a nightmare or they are aggressively price-shopping for the cheapest guy in town, don't even go. Your time is too valuable.

2. Speed Kills (The Competition)

The single biggest factor in winning a quote—other than price—is speed. If you look at a job on Tuesday, the quote needs to be in their inbox by Wednesday morning. If you take a week to send a quote, the customer assumes you don't care, you're disorganized, and you'll probably take forever to actually do the job.

3. Don't Itemise Every Screw

A common mistake is listing the individual price of every power point, length of cable, and hour of labour. Don't do this. When you itemise prices, customers become experts. They Google the price of a GPO at Bunnings, complain about your markup, and try to negotiate lines out of the quote.

Instead, itemise the value, not the price. Bullet point exactly what you will do, the high-quality gear you are using, the cleanup, the testing, and the warranty. Then provide one single, fixed price at the bottom.

4. Provide Options (Good, Better, Best)

If you give a customer one price ($2,000), their only choice is "Yes" or "No." If you give them three options (Basic fix: $1,200, Standard Upgrade: $2,000, Premium Package with smart tech: $3,500), their choice changes from "Should I hire this guy?" to "Which package should I choose?" It shifts the psychology completely.

5. Know When to Skip the Quote

Sometimes you get a lead that is too far away, completely outside your normal scope of work, or you are simply too booked out to attend. If a job is in Sydney but it's an hour drive in traffic, quoting it is a massive risk. You'll burn fuel and time for a job you might not win, and probably don't even want.

Instead of quoting it high to scare them away (which wastes your time anyway), just refer it out. Tell the customer you can't make it, but you have a trusted team who can. Forward the lead, skip the quoting headache, and collect a payout if the job goes ahead.

Sent the quote and heard nothing? Don't assume it's a no. People get busy. Set a reminder in your phone to text them 48 hours after sending the quote. A simple: "Hi John, just checking you received the quote for the switchboard upgrade. Happy to answer any questions." This simple step will close jobs your competitors abandoned.
