Solar and Battery Installations: Why Referring is Often Better Than Installing

As electricity prices across Sydney continue to climb, every homeowner is looking at solar and home battery systems (like the Tesla Powerwall). Because you are their trusted electrician, they will naturally ask you: "Mate, do you guys do solar?"

If you don't have the specific accreditations, you usually have to say no. And when you say no, you are walking away from a $15,000 to $30,000 project.

The Barrier to Entry

To legally install solar and batteries and allow the customer to claim the Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), you must hold specific accreditation (previously CEC, now transitioning to SAA). Getting this accreditation involves:

  • Expensive and time-consuming training courses.
  • Annual compliance fees and CPD points.
  • A massive amount of paperwork per job to claim the STCs.
  • Dealing with network provider (e.g., Ausgrid, Endeavour) grid connection approvals.

Furthermore, solar is a volume game. The companies making the best margins are buying panels and inverters by the container load. If you buy one pallet from a wholesaler, your material costs will be too high to compete.

The Warranty Nightmare

Solar inverters fail. Panels degrade. If you install a system, you are on the hook for the warranty. When an inverter faults three years later, you have to drive out to the site unpaid, diagnose the fault, box up the inverter, deal with the manufacturer's RMA process, and go back to install the replacement. For a sole trader, this unpaid labor is crippling.

The Smarter Move: The Referral Model

You don't need to be on a hot tin roof in the middle of summer to make money from the solar boom. You can use a referral model to generate passive income.

When a customer asks if you do solar, you say: "We focus purely on standard electrical, but I partner with one of the best accredited solar teams in Sydney. I'll get them to call you."

Because the total value of a solar and battery job is so high, the referral fees are substantial. You can easily earn $500 to $1,000+ for passing on a lead that converts. You get the cash, the dedicated solar team gets the job, and the customer gets a professional install. Most importantly, when the inverter faults in three years, the customer calls them, not you.

If you have solar leads in Sydney that you can't service, don't let them go to waste.
